Shravana Amavasya is a spiritual event observed by Hindus. It is observed in the Hindu lunar calendar 5th month called Shravan. The Shravana month in 2018 is from Gregorian date 23rd of July to the 22nd of August. It marks the rainy season. Amavasya means new or no moon day. Therefore, Shravana Amavasya is the no moon day that falls in the Hindu rainy season month of Shravana. Shravana Amavasya in 2018 falls on the 11th of August, Saturday.
Shravana Amavasya is observed in dedication to Lord Shiva and the departed ancestors of natives. Amavasya time is considered auspicious for the worshipping and remembrance of the departed ancestors. Many devotees also pray to Lord Shiva for a good rainy season and rainfall.
Lord Shiva is one of the top three Hindu deities, along with Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Lord Shiva is known as the destroyer of the evil and the protector of the Universe. Goddess Parvati is considered as the equal part of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is also followed-worshipped in Nepal and parts of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Bangladesh, South Africa, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, the West Indies, and Suriname etc. Traces of ancient worship can be found in Cambodia (Lord Shiva Lingam Temple), Laos (ruined Khmer Temple), Thailand, a small minority in Afghanistan (Hindu Kush mountains), and other parts of the world.
Shravana Amavasya is also known by different names region-wise, e.g., Gatari Amavasya in Maharashtra, Chukkala Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Chitalgi Amavasya in Orissa, Hariyali Amavasya in Rajasthan.
