Guru Nanak Jayanti

Commemorating Waheguru Guru Nanak Dev ji and his Endeavors/ Thoughts :

Today, November 4th, 2017 – “Guru Nanak Jayanti” is being celebrated as the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev ji, the world over. His birthday falls on different dates each year as it falls on Pooranmashi (full moon) day in the month of Katak (October-November).
Guruji’s mission was to spread brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God, spread of love in neighborhood irrespective of religion/ beliefs, he rendered help to the weak, he opposed caste and class distinctions, attacked hypocrisy, greed, corruption, idolatry etc. In fact, Guruji’s first companion was a low caste Muslim. He once stated “There is no Hindu, nor any Mussalman”.

The footings of the current “Langar” system, especially at Gurudwaras globally, can be dated on Guruji’s distribution of the excess food to the poor/ needy and the hungry, and a common kitchen was made where any person regardless of his caste, creed, gender, age, economic status etc. could sit and eat together under one roof/area, vis-à-vis, with no parity.
A place named “Sacha Sauda” (meaning – True Business/Deal) is testimony to one of his good noble works and intentions. It was when at age 14 his father gave him twenty rupees to start business, he instead went and bought food and distributed it amongst Saints and the poor, therefore, the conceiving of term “Sacha Sauda”.
In his journey of spirituality, he studied many religious systems like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam.
Let us commemorate and celebrate his birthday on this modern day with the spirit of equality, brotherhood, companionship, compassion, generosity, spread of peace/ love, contribution to humanity etc. and a connection with spirituality and the almighty.
